This project brings together local knowledge, historical materials, and ongoing research on how water is used and managed in daily life. A small exhibit and community noticeboard, currently on display at the Lismore Gaelic Heritage Centre, share early stories and findings with residents and visitors.
Alongside this, current research is exploring how water is sourced, stored, and shared on the island today. A second exhibition, planned for 2026, will trace the history of one island home to explore how everyday life has changed alongside shifts in water infrastructure, household water use, and the way land is used.
By looking at both past and present, the project highlights the importance of understanding water cultures in context, and the ways in which water systems must respond to the particularities of island life, landscape, and community. It invites us to think about how emerging technologies can be shaped to fit the realities of those who will live them.
